However, a soft white or baby peach eyeliner (or lipliner) can work wonders along the inner rim of the lower lid. Navy blue liner applied to the top lashline can also make eyes look wider and whiter, whereas black liner looks harsh and actually makes eye irritations stand out.

Lashes that are full-bodied and painted in shades of navy blue, bright plum or even marshmallow will turn heads, although the first two are much subtler alternatives. The trick is to coat the top and bottom sides of the lashes so that your natural roots are less noticeable, then sweep the color up and out as you would regular mascara. Whenever possible, it’s best to choose waterproof formulas so the colors don’t unexpectedly stream down your cheeks.

Wear a “bare” lipstick without liner or you risk looking too outlined, and tote the lipstick with you for mid-day touchups since light colors tend to be fast-fading. Prefer undertones that are gold, tawny or mauve? Putting foundation on the lips prior to applying makeup will tone down your natural lip color and bring out the true hue of the lipstick.

We’re talking shimmery, white powder (if you’re fair) or light gold (if you have a medium or dark complexion)—both of which impart radiance because they reflect light. To slenderize a wide nose, apply a well-blended line down the center of the bridge; to lift the eyes, apply in the outer corners, sweeping upward toward the temple and spotlight the area above the arch of the brows. This is a great trick to have in your arsenal at any age, and especially helpful for mature women who crave a youthful glow. You’ll get that velvety, polished look while still looking luminous.

Though favored for summer and fall, you can incorporate these colors into your makeup routine year-round—and add a dash of gold for good measure. Use dark green shadow with caution, either in the crease or to outline the lashes, always blending well. Toffee or tan colors look gorgeous on the lids—or the lips.

What will you need to look the part? Matte, berry -stained lips to impart a “bitten” or “bee-stung” effect, creamy silver eye shadow and liquid eyeliner extended a speck beyond the natural lash line to elongate your peepers. Also notable, though best worn separately: Defined cheeks, accentuated with metallic cream blushes or matte powder applied with a light touch under the cheekbones, not directly on top of them. Make these trends unabashedly unique—or “eccentrically glamorous” as high fashion guru Simon Doonan might say—by pairing them with glamorous pin-curls à la burlesque temptress Dita Von Teese.

Open your mind to a soft dove gray and you’ll find it can look unexpectedly dramatic—and it generally flatters all skin tones. A wispy, sheer hue adds depth without all the darkness. Without eyeliner, a bit swept in the crease or on the lid appears tastefully undone. How to pull together this look? Break out the baby pink lipstick and dabble in the new crop of colored mascaras (think plum or royal blue).
